The Power of a growth mindset
Dr. Carol S Deweck states that the growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others.
How does successful people develop a growth mindset that sets them apart from being mediocre?
Successful people in the growth mindset think differently and they make a positive impact on themselves and others.
We often admire successful athletes and wonder how they arrived at the top of their game. An athlete such as Michael Jordon had a growth mindset. He overcame his deficiencies by focusing and practicing specific techniques that propelled him to high achievements.
The passion for stretching yourself and being consistent even when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset.
In addition to successful athletes, you too can achieve your goals. This can be achieved through your determination and self-discipline to take small steps to build your confidence. Also, enduring failures along the way and allowing yourself to learn from your set-backs. This mindset will push you to soar like an eagle with a clear overview of your goals.
Having a growth mindset has taught me to become intentional about achieving a promotion in my career. I felt stuck in a previous role and realised that my sole efforts were not producing results as quickly as I may have wanted. Upon deep reflection, I asked for help from my coaches, mentors, friends, colleagues and people in positions I inspired to become.
How did I succeed to the next level – I fostered a growth mindset!
I realised that my hard work and effort alone wasn’t moving the needle quick enough until I asked others for help that enabled me to secure my promotion in an area where I had no previous experience. I was ecstatic and grateful for the exposure of this learning process, and it was in this moment I recognised the power of a growth mindset. I gained clarity on who I wanted to become. I re-ignited my dreams, discovered my purpose and took consistent action towards my goal.
During this time of thriving towards my future goal, I was unsuccessful at a few job interviews before securing the exact role that I wanted. Even though the journey to my promotion was not a smooth process, I was able to learn from my interview feedback and show up differently each time. The disappointments and the right support helped me to be consistent in moving forward. As hard as this might be to hear, each “no” caused me to believe in myself a bit more and soon I was developing confidence in my ability to perform at my best.
